Kelson was the prime contractor for the renovation of the steam to hot water conversion and Air Handling Units (AHU) replacement at Central Technical School (Heritage School). Located in downtown Toronto, this secondary school offers technical programs and a visual arts centre to over 1,600 students. Kelson successfully installed nine air handling units (AHUs) within a highly constrained timeframe and limited space. The scope of work also included the installation of a new dust collection system for the woodworking shops. In addition, three new hot water heating boilers were installed to replace the existing steam system. Kelson was responsible for the demolition of the old steam plant and the installation of new hot water piping and associated equipment. Due to extremely tight site conditions, both in terms of space and equipment transportation, Kelson had to employ innovative strategies during the planning and installation phases. For instance, the penthouse mechanical room AHUs were brought in through the louvers of the existing units. All equipment was designed and manufactured to fit through the school’s hallways and mechanical room access points. The newly installed dust collection system significantly improves the efficiency and cleanliness of the woodworking areas by effectively removing wood chips and dust. To accommodate a new wall in the dust collector room, helical piles were installed beneath the ground-floor foundation to enhance structural support. A new chimney liner was also installed within the existing seven-story chimney. Given that the building was originally constructed in 1912 and is designated as a heritage structure, Kelson exercised a high degree of care and diligence throughout the installation process, particularly with regard to preserving the integrity of the building’s exterior. This was an occupied facility.
