The Toronto Reference Library went through a major renovation to the facility in 2011. This involved renovations to the upper three floors of the building. This phase features a two-storey high Special Collections room (Marilyn & Charles Baillie Special Collections) which was built on the 5th floor of the existing building. The circular structure is framed with structural steel suspended from the slab above, with a perimeter mezzanine level lined with book shelves that contain some of the rarest collections in the city. This environmentally controlled room features titanium cladding, concrete clad reading tables, and a curved steel staircase complete with glass balustrades. Significant cosmetic improvements to the entire public space were also implemented. Previous phases of work included a new two-storey high entrance vestibule, a public art gallery, a new entrance lobby, a coffee shop, and expanded public space.
Mechanical Systems
Kelson was responsible for the mechanical systems of this project. It had multiple phasing due the library being occupied at the time of the renovation. Renovation work in ceiling and floors above the special collections room on the 5th floor required attention to detail to ensure no damage was done to the rare books below. This was a successful project and the owner was extremely pleased with our service.
