In November 2008, construction began on a two story extension of an existing animal research facility at Sanofi Pasteur’s Toronto facility. The basement mechanical room housed two new 100% fresh air custom air handling units to serve the animal holding & procedure rooms as well as the corridors on the floor above. A third air handling unit provided ventilation to the basement mechanical and electrical rooms. A roof top chiller was added to supplement the chilled water system that was extended from the existing building. Other systems that were tied back to the existing building are: compressed air, carbon dioxide, and steam and condensate. The steam was used in the new building for the generation of domestic hot water, non-potable domestic hot water, hot water heating and glycol heating. A heat reclaim system was installed to capture heat from the exhausted air from both the new and exsiting buildings. A new stainless steel automatic animal watering and purification system was also installed. A new cage washer and equipment autoclave sterilizer was fitted out on the second floor. Strobic fans located on the roof exhausted the new space.

Mechanical Systems

It was necessary to take extreme care when working adjacent to and within the existing animal research facility. Certain tasks were scheduled around experiments and procedures.
