University of Toronto - Sigmund Samuel AHU#2 & #4
Completion: June 01, 2016
Location: Toronto
The University of Toronto Sigmund Samuel Library AHU Renovation involved the demolition of the existing Air Handling Units (AHU 2 and 14), located in the basement and upper mechanical room of heritage library. These were to be replaced with brand new units that required to be built in sections, and then installed. Kelson was the prime contractor on this project. Kelson removed the existing air handling units with extremely limited access. Kelson had to remove sections in manageable pieces that fit through existing door. Kelson built brand new Air Handling Units piece by piece in place and pressure test in place after installation. Air balancing was a critical component of this job to ensure the final air handling units (with integrated supply fan) met airflow requirements per design documents. It was very difficult to get heavy pieces into the upper mechanical room without elevator access. Solution was to remove sections of walls and remediate afterwards. This was an aggressive schedule with a small window to demo existing units and get new units installed and commissioned before the start heating season.     Â
