Hotel Dieu Hospital Redevelopment
Completion: November 05, 2012
Location: Kingston
Total Construction Value: $20,000,000
Size: 36000 sq. ft.
A redevelopment project focused on renovating 36,000 sq. ft. of the Hotel Dieu Hospital in downtown Kingston. This redevelopment will allow the hospital to increase its capacity by at least 50 000 patients per year, and makes more efficient use of its available floor space. The renovation involves the two floors and several wings. Along with a new elevator tower and staircase, the project involves the extension of a current elevator tower and the renovation of the main lobby and facilities spaces. This renovated space will be used as a Pulmonary Function lab, a Cystoscopy suite, and a new clinic space. The project, started in October 2010 and on track for its November 2012 completion date, and will allow Hotel Dieu Hospital to make immediate use of its new layout. Dust and noise barriers have been put in place since the beginning of construction to assure infection control as well as peace of mind for current patients of Hotel Dieu Hospital.
Mechanical Systems
The renovation project features an important and necessary elevator tower extension. The new two car bank elevator will allow improved access for both personnel and equipment to upper floors of the hospital, thus improving patient flow through the existing main elevators. One of the project’s biggest challenges was to work seamlessly with hospital operations as to minimize the impacts of construction during the length of construction. Geo. A. Kelson was successful in working in parallel with hospital staff to assure complete operability of areas not under construction.
