Hockley Valley Resort - Cooling Tower and Make-Up Water Air Unit Replacement
Completion: January 06, 2014
Location: Orangeville
Hockley Valley is a country club located just outside of Orangeville Ontario.  It was originally designed to use a geo-thermal loop to heat and cool the building.  With age, the system was giving the owner some reliability issues and therefore they requested that supplemental boilers and cooling units be installed.  The Hockley Valley geo-thermal retrofit project involved the installation of a closed loop evapourative cooler, new boilers and new heat pump units.   The installation of these components provided redundancy,  if required the owner could switch from the geothermal loop to the evapourative cooler or to the boilers in order to maintain their condenser loop water temperatures.  The closed loop evapourative cooler was a 60 ton unit that was placed at grade directly outside of the clubhouse.  It was enclosed with a high cedar fence in order to prevent sound issues and was purchased with low-noise fans.   The new boilers were located adjacent to the main geothermal header and were tied into the condenser loop in parallel so that if the geo-thermal loop could not support the load the boilers would fire in order to bring the condenser loop temperature back into range.   New heat pump units were added to the system to provide make up air, and also to provide local spot heating and cooling.  These units were tied into the condenser loop.  The project was completed in January of 2014. Â
