University of Toronto Central Steam Plant Boiler & Fan Replacement consisted of the replacement of two existing 300HP Boiler Force Draft Fan Motors. Kelson was the prime contractor and responsible to supply and installation of two new 600amp breakers within an existing Motor Control Centre associated with the new motor. Also, the supply and install two new Variable Speed Drives associated with the new motor. Work was done in two phases; one motor, breaker and drive at a time. This was a challenging project as procurement of new 600amp breakers to place within existing thirty year old switchgear posed some connection compatibility issues. Kelson approached a switchgear retrofit company who provided an intermediate module to allow the new breaker to connect to the existing switchgear bus bars. This resulted in the schedule completion delay of phase two which had the blessing of the University of Toronto.Β  Phase one was accomplished on time by using the existing breaker temporarily after refurbishing it and adjusting its parameters to suit the new 300HP motor. This was a successful project and the owner was pleased with end results.
