Description: Kelson was the mechanical contractor for the new state-of-the-art community centre. The building is comprised of: a large central gymnasium surrounded by a walking track, multipurpose rooms, community kitchen, office and administration, EarlyOn childcare facility, fitness studio, splash-pad, community kitchen, change room/washroom facilities and storage spaces/rooms. The new facility was designed in compliance with all applicable municipal accessibility design standards and with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). The building is designed for a high level of energy efficiency with a geothermal field, roof structure that will be solar ready, a high-performance building envelope and LED lighting throughout.

Mechanical Systems

Geothermal field comprising of 36, 124-meter-deep bore holes for low temperature glycol supply and return lines for heat exchange to heat pumps throughout the building. More energy efficiency includes: solar infrastructure, high-performance building envelope, enhanced day-lighting strategies and LED lighting throughout to provide a total-carbon emission reduction of over 50%. A new stormwater management design was developed for the entire site in order to improve drainage and conform with the local conservation authority’s guidelines. Won the City of Kingston 2023 Livable City Award.
