The Dell Quick Start Project in Mississauga began in early 2012 with the repurposing of a former plastics manufacturing facility. The building’s interior, previously demolished, left only the structural shell, providing a clean slate for renovation. Over the following months, Kelson and its subcontractors worked closely to transform the space into a cutting-edge data centre for one of Canada’s largest technology companies. Kelson’s mechanical scope included the design, fabrication, and installation of a glycol-based cooling system to support the facility’s large Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) units, which maintain optimal operating temperatures for servers and mainframe computers using two 185-ton air-cooled water chillers. Additionally, Kelson managed the installation of a new HVAC system for the building, incorporating three air handling units to provide efficient environmental control for both the administrative areas and the main data centre space. Key highlights of Kelson’s work included the construction of a mechanical room to house equipment servicing the cooling requirements of the data hall and main distribution frame room, as well as ventilation for the administrative and support areas. The project also involved the installation of two 185-ton water chillers and one 180-ton dry cooler, along with all necessary piping to integrate and service the facility’s mechanical systems.
